Grown, harvested and produced in Italy and now finally available at my local Costco – Kirkland Signature San Marzano Tomato with Basil Leaf! The Costco pack includes three 28-ounce cans for $10.49. The ingredients are simply San Marzano whole peeled tomatoes, San Marzano tomato juice, and basil leaves. While supplies last. Item #1221266.
It has been available at other Costco locations for awhile but it finally made it to the Covington, Washington Costco. It may be not available at all Costco locations. Prices may vary by location. Limited to stock on hand. When in doubt, call your local Costco before you go.
What are San Marzano Tomatoes?
San Marzano is a type of plum tomato that is longer and thinner and usually with less seeds than your typical plum tomato from the grocery store. They have a deep red color with a vibrant tomato flavor with less acidity than other tomatoes. It’s grown in San Marzano sul Sarno, which is located in the Campania region of southern Italy. Genuine San Marzano canned tomatoes bear a Pomodoro San Marzano dell’Agro Sarnese Nocerino D.O.P label. You can find San Marzano tomatoes outside of Italy but they are not DOP San Marzano. DOP just means Protected Designation of Origin. These canned tomatoes are delicious in a variety of recipes from Tomato Soup to Penne Alla Vodka to Spaghetti Bolognese.
